Bobcat & Pinewood Derby

Other than being baptized, Sambo thinks the next best thing about turning 8 is being a Cub Scout. Here he is getting his Bobcat award:

He loves going with his buddies to scouts every Wednesday and doing all kinds of stuff. His pack leader does a really good job.

Tuesday it was the famous Pinewood derby. It's funny to see how much the dads get into this action. BS did good letting Sambo design the shape, colors, and design of the car. They worked on it together and this is how it turned out:

The flames are stickers - we're not that artsy at our house :)

At the derby, it's fun and intense watching the boys' anticipation of how fast their car will go. Sam's car won the first round, but got beat in the second. It wasn't the fastest car. When he lost, Sambo was trying not to be sad or upset (but he was). He blinked fast a few times and managed to smile.

In the end, he won a trophy for "Best paint job." He wasn't very thrilled with that but he was glad that he got a cool trophy. That kid is so competitive.

Here, Quincy is giving Sambo's 1st race a "Thumb's up." She cannot figure out how to put only her thumbs up so this is how she always does it. If you give her thumb's up, she puts up her pointy finger. I love her in the other picture. So cute.

Home for Spring Break

For the 1st time ever, as long as I can remember, even in my childhood, we stayed home for Spring break. Growing up, my family always went somewhere, and BS and I have enjoyed carrying-on that tradition with our kids. We love the long break from school...a whole week (and with 2 weekends, that's like 9 days)! Our annual get-aways usually include St. George, Zions National Park, Las Vegas, or Arizona (or Grand Canyon once, or some mixture of 2 or 3 places).

But, because of the pups, we were home-bound. We canceled our reservations at our hotel in Springdale, canceled our hotel in St. George, and canceled the plans we had made with our traveling friends. The kids thought they were going to die when we told them we weren't going anywhere. BS and I did our best to explain to them that we would still have lots of fun.

And, we did have fun. And we even got some spring cleaning done. Lucky for me, the weather was crap so we had good reason to stay inside one day and clean. Of course, there were rewards involved. The kids made a list of all of the fun things they wanted to do during the week. I made a deal with them that if they would help me out with whatever I needed in the morning, then I/we would take them somewhere fun. On Monday I had the kids all to myself because BS was driving to St. George and back for work. We met our friends, The Plummers, at the movie and saw "How to Train A Dragon" in 3D IMAX. It was such an awesome show!

Other activities for the week included:

-LOTS of playing with friends (don't get much time to do this during school)
-Jump On It
-Eating at Tepanyaki
-Grandma's Hot Tub
-Spring cleaning all day Tuesday (kids were actually great little workers)
-Lots of playing with the puppies
-Driving to Hildale, Utah and back in one day (mom - for hotch potch)
-Batting Cages
-Dance Competition - Millie
-Re-finishing wood floor - BS helping his brother Adam
-Open gym at gymnastics
-Ice Cream stops
-Brunch at Kneaders
-Swimming
-Bike Ride date (BS and I - something we've only done twice in 2 years)!

The week finished off nice with warm weather and a yummy dinner at Grandma Judy's on Sunday. Grandma and Grandpa Guffey were in Hawaii all week - so lucky!

We missed being able to go on our little trip, but despite staying home all week long, we managed to have a good time! It gets me excited for summer!

Here is a picture of our cute "Smurfette" at her 1st dance competition of the year.

Easter Time

We had a great "Fun Run" today at school, now we're off to the cabin for the weekend to celebrate Easter! We are sooooo excited to spend time with our cousins from Minnesota!
